Duties and Responsibilities:Under the general supervision of Chief Advancement and Community Engagement Officer, the Small Business Development (SBDC) Director is responsible for assisting in developing and implementing the Center's strategic plan in alignment with the College's Strategic Direction and the New Mexico Small Business Development Center's strategic plan. Supervision of day-to-day operations and SBDC staff. Oversees preparation of a variety of records and reports that are related to department operations and activities, including budget and financial records. Manages, monitors and evaluates the quality of the counseling provided by the Center. Responsible for providing counseling to existing business owners and to new entrepreneurs.
  • Administer the operations of the program to meet SBDC program objectives and contractual requirements within the required service area
  • Provide high quality individual instruction to entrepreneurs, business owners, and business managers. Analyze situations, make recommendations, and educate clients with regard to business plans, market feasibility, financial viability, operations management, and legal structures, to name but a few topics. Maintain an appropriate level and mix of clients as noted by annual deliverables and strategic plan objectives.
  • Identify training needs of the business community served and assess College training offerings to be modified or customized to be responsive to meet those needs. . Collaborate with College programs to generate curricula for business programs, seminars, conferences, etc. for the local business interests... Ensure appropriate resources are created or allocated for successful client training.
  • Develop and implement business and marketing plans to promote the Center and the offerings as part of the College. Disseminate pertinent information to the business community via various media.
  • Develop specific area(s) of expertise within the arena of business development. Apply this knowledge through, consulting tools, training programs, research projects, and/or other impact measures. Understand clients' diverse and specific business needs and apply product knowledge to those needs. Provide technical advice to clients on all aspects of Ingenuity services provided.
  • Provide and facilitate free, in-depth individual business analysis and referral of clients to appropriate resources as required. Serve as an advocate of business development, expansion and retention in the area, thereby becoming a visible leader in the local business community representing both the SBDC and CNM. Work collaboratively with private-sector businesses, other economic development assistance units of the College, and other units of State Government to further the economic well-being of Albuquerque's citizens. Engage in public relations activities such as, speeches, presentations, active committee participation, and direct discussions. Relevant audiences include bankers, colleges and universities, chambers of commerce, economic development authorities, main street coordinators, government agencies, local political offices, civic organizations, and local media.
  • Minimum Requirements:Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Marketing, Finance, or Accounting
  • Ten (10 years of small business ownership, experience consulting/advising small businesses or high level management experience in the operation of a for profit business entity.
  • Basic understanding of local and federal business taxes and demonstrated understanding of local business licensing requirements and business regulations.

  • Excellent customer service and communication (oral and written) skills are essential for this position.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality is essential for this position.
  • Valid New Mexico Driver's License.
  • Preferences:
  • Master's Degree and direct higher education experience.
  • Knowledge of small business development load guarantee products and ability to assist with loan packages as necessary.
  • Ability to develop network of lenders and funding partners.
  • Knowledge of market and industry research methods and forecasting tools and resources.
  • Understanding of sound business practices, and the ability to diagnose business related problems and provide potential solutions.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Ability to understand and explain financial statements, accounting, and bookkeeping principles to clients.
  • Ability to assist clients with search engine optimization and social media marketing.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
