Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the nonprofit accounting functions to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and function. Supervise staff, which includes prioritizing and assigning work; conduct performance evaluations; ensure staff is trained; ensure employees follow policies and procedures; maintain a healthy and safe working environment; and, make hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Partner with staff in the development of periodic reports that are easily understood by target audiences, including monthly reconciliation and analysis of the various financial activities for CNM's non-profit entities, helping to ensure revenue and expenses are understood in context with planned budgets.
  • Coordinate the development and monitoring of budgets including budget development, reporting actuals, and preparing the monthly financial management-reporting package presented to the Executive Team and/or Board of Directors. Analyzes the various financial activities with the organizations' staff, helping to ensure revenue and expenses are aligned within planned budgets. Coordinate with staff on the research of variances to determine potential corrective actions plans; demonstrating critical thinking in the analysis reflecting unexpected but potentially logical pivots in business strategy.
  • Coordinate with the non-profit entities on all gifts and donors. Coordinate with the Business Office regarding compliance with all grant and contract activities. Engage the finance committee(s) of the board of directors to develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans and projections.
  • Determine which non-profit activities are subject to the assessment of unrelated business income tax (UBIT) and NM Gross Receipts Taxes. This position must understand the types of activities that may generate UBIT according to IRS regulations.
  • Assist in the coordination of the annual financial audit for CNM's non-profit entities. Prepare or oversee the preparation of the annual financial statements in compliance with Governmental GAAP for the annual financial audit. Prepare or oversee the preparation of prepared by client (PBC) schedules as required by the external auditors. Respond as required to external auditor inquiries and issues.
  • Coordinate audits and proper filing of all tax returns including assisting in the preparation and review of the 990 IRS tax return for non-profit entities.
  • Minimum Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Public Administration or related field.
  • Bachelor's degree and CPA with ten (10) years of increasingly responsible experience in the accounting field
  • Three (3) years' experience supervising accounting personnel. Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting
  • Preferences:
  • Public or Higher Education experience preferred.
    Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills.
  • Advanced understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and government accounting pronouncements related to higher education and nonprofit operations.
  • Comfort with equity and debt financing instruments.
  • Familiarity and enthusiasm for the most current IT tools and systems used in accounting
  • Advanced skill with Excel, Finance system, and reporting expertise.
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, and techniques of contract administration.
  • Ability to assess contract compliance and product/service quality.
  • Advanced PC skills, including spreadsheets, database, graphics, statistical forecasting and modeling.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, assign and delegate work.
  • Ability to adapt and respond with an entrepreneurial mindset while balancing the demands of a publicly funded entity's more highly structured budget and procedural environment.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Excellent communication skills, including oral, written and/or nonverbal.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
